Casa La Rad Garnacha Edición Especial, a wine from Casa La Rad in Rioja Oriental

Casa La Rad Garnacha

Edición Especial

2021 ·  Rioja DOCa

We craft our Garnacha Edición Especial to showcase the extraordinary quality potential of the most iconic red grape variety in Rioja Oriental, sourced from old vines grown "en vaso" in exceptional soils at high altitudes.

Grape Varieties: 100% Garnacha (en vaso)

Aging: 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, 50% new oak.

Altitude: Between 535 and 640 meters | 1,750 - 2,100 feet

Average age of vines: 52 years

Origin:

Vineyard Profile: The grapes come from 50-year-old vineyard plots located in both the highest and lowest elevations of the Casa La Rad estate, all of which are covered in native vegetation and surrounded by rich biodiversity.

The higher elevations are characterized by mineral-rich mountainous soils, while the lower elevations contain more limestone, clay, and weathered bedrock.

Winemaking and Aging:

Winemaking: Alcoholic fermentation took place in open 500-liter French oak barrels using selected yeasts and gentle extraction techniques during maceration.

Half of the production underwent malolactic fermentation in new French barrels. The wine was aged for 12 to 14 months in semi-new barrels and is vegan certified.

Tasting Notes:

Garnet color with ruby edges. Clean and transparent.

Intense aroma with notes of red fruits—strawberry and raspberry—and floral hints of jasmine and violets.

Powerful yet elegant on the palate, with a silky entry. Its distinct red fruit character lingers in a long, aromatic finish.

Additional Comments:

Tim Atkin MW (2020 vintage): “Aromas of mint, pine, and wild thyme prelude a bright, refreshing, and elegant palate, with notes of cinnamon, redcurrant, and wild strawberry.” (93 points)

Production: 2,300 bottles
